Toucans are not very common as pets so I doubt that many are up for adoption. Due to the cost of them I would think that most people would try selling them as apposed to putting them up for adoption. If you do not mind paying some money you could see if a breeder has an older one that did not sell. They may be willing to sell it for less. Good luck with your search!

Toucans also require a special diet, as well as a large cage which would set a person back at least $600, if not more, because of how active they are... They aren't very flightly birds, but they still require a lot of room to move about in. I've seen one toucan that was kept in an encloser that was at least 8' x 8' and he had a few perches as well as a big thick rope that he could hop around on.

As others have mentioned these birds are really not common.
I don't recall ever seeing a toucan up for rescue. It is possible some day you may find one, but it's pretty unlikely. These birds are uncommon and in very high demand, I think most people whom have them know that, and would try to sell rather than adopt out any birds they can't keep or don't want. It's a demand and supply issue, some breeders have such a high demand that they have waiting lists. So unfortunately the only answer I have to your question is one you are going to get a lot, I don't know where you'd find a rescue. Keep an eye out and search like crazy, but I think you are going to have an extremely hard time finding a rescue toucan. |

No one was telling you not to do it. When you ask a question on a forum like this, you need to understand that people will also share their opinions and experience. We have a lot of knowledgeable members here, as well as a lot of lurkers. When people respond to a post, they see it as their responsibility not just to answer the specific question you ask but also to add context and educate other people who may have similar questions and may want to know more about what's involved in a bird's care. You can learn a lot from members like Monica - I recommend being open to what other members have to say and not getting mad at them for responding. Otherwise you'll get a lot fewer responses, and we'll ALL be poorer for it. (I, for example, did not know that toucans are very active birds that require larger-than-normal cages, and am happy to know that.)

If you can afford the care and have the space, then by all means, go for it, so long as you know what you are getting into! They can be hilarious "little" birds! It is usually pretty uncommon, as the others have said, that one would find a toucan up for adoption. You may try looking at bird clubs and rescues, but your best bet may be from a breeder.

First, it is great that your first thought is adoption. That is a great attitude. Second, I commend you for attempting to gain more knowledge before impulsively jumping into something.
I think that Toucans are very difficult to care for in captivity. They are able to eat a diet in the wild that is not well understood and therefore difficult to duplicate in captivity. For example, the Pittsburgh Aviary that has several has to do regular blood work on the animals to monitor iron levels in their bloodstream. They are prone to hemachromatosis (iron storage disease). They also have to give them tea in their water to bind some of the iron... this is a delicate balance and difficult to do over the long haul. I am a fan of these birds, too and do not want to discourage you but in all of the years I have been doing rescue work I have never seen one come through. |

I too am interested in adding a toucan to my family, but I am having trouble finding a toucan breeder. I would really like to find a breeder in the Chicago area, but anywhere in the midwest would do.
