My african Gray named Babe is depressed

I bought her over a week ago. She is 2 her owner died 2 months ago and the husband is 80 and was unable to take care of her. She was plucking her feathers. She will come to me and now sits on my chest and lets me rub and scratch her neck. Also lets me pet her wings while sitting there and not moving with her head down for me to scratch her head and neck. I feel I am making progress with her. I got her vet checked to make sure she was ok. He said she is a little under weight. She is eating like a piggie so I think she is doing ok. She has 4 new toys. She does hollar for Caroline her deceased owner. Any sugestions. I am a first time African Gray owner. I bought her from Amys birds in Mitchell Indiana. She has 600 birds her cages are always clean. It was her aunts bird

You doing the right thing. Maybe you can find out what her favorite food treat is and try make friends that way. Bathing or misting may alleviate feather plucking a bit. You could also try talk to her and explain that Caroline is deceased. Birds understand a lot. Talk to her as you would a young child.

Hi limpyduckling!
You are in my area! I live about 8 miles from Mitchell!!

I also have a rehomed grey. Greys do not like anything new or changes. They don't even like you to take the curtains down for a wash or leave a bag lying on the counter. You have to introduce things slowly to them.

Sounds like you are doing fine with her.

She is grieving, that is normal and healthy for all creatures,I agree, I would talk to her about Caroline and console her ,you are doing very well with her just keep doing what your doing! Just keep telling her that you love her and will care for her! Lucky you and lucky her!

I will echo everything that has been said. Having done several moves as a child with a TAG (yay for military kids), we'd have to explain to her that we're moving and going somewhere new. She'd pluck at first, but then once the routine of everyday life was back to normal, she was good. Good luck!! I'm glad she's able to have someone who wants to spend time with her. :o)
