manila rope net

Hi! I have been wanting to make a net for my birds to play on and was going to use untreated manila rope as it is easier to use than sisal. The only company I can find that sells untreated informed me that as the rope is made, they apply mineral oil to help form it. He says the mineral oil evaporates. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if any residue will be toxic or not to my birds.
Thanks!

I used manila rope in the making of the rope net/grid I use to cover the opening to our patio. I haven't had any problems from it. Jute rope is another good one to use.

Do you mind if I ask what diameter you used and where you found it? It has taken me about a year to find untreated manilla, I was going for 1/2" for my conure.
Do your birds love the net?

I was surprised they didn't play on it more. They pretty much only use it to go from one gym to another. I used 3/8" I think it it. I got it at Home Depot, the Manila, and the particular stuff I got I have not seen there sence!!

WOW! That is beautiful!! I had seen it once before at Home Depot, but when I went back to get it, could no longer find it. Is that a nanday on the net? I have one too, Gimli. I have had her for just over a year. I absolutely love her! I can't believe your fids don't play on it more. And what a beautiful electus! That is the parrot I am considering getting a few, or a number or years down the road. Right now, I am just enjoying my Nanday and my budgies. Thank you so much, Jim.

I just bought 150 feet of 1 1/4 inch manila rope to make a cargo net for my macaws. Mine has a funny odor to it that I wasn't familiar with. I contacted the seller and was told that manila has natural oils in it and that is what I smelled.

I could find no other info on the net listing what this rope may be treated with. Everything comes back to it being natural odor.

I can't wait to get my cargo net done. I'm figuring on it being about 8 feet wide and 10 feet tall (I have tall ceilings).

I'll also be using some of the rope for a simple single piece knotted climbing rope.
