megalomaniac toy revisited

well, for those of you that may not remember, after Sophie broke her beak earlier this year I made her a monster toy. She loves to climb up threw toys like this as well as shred them. A quick reminder..................

then came all the hoopla about toys made in China. I got the wood from toys at Walmart. Some where safe dies. Some were paint. I was assured all was safe when I inquired. Well I have never been fully comfortable with that. Today at work I was messing around and gathered up some scrap lumber and started cutting and drilling. When I was done I came up with this...................

thats after the GSE/hot water soak n rinse. As my lovely wife was at work this evening I went to work. Tearing down the the lines pulling off the painted blocks then replacing/adding the new blocks. A couple design changes here and there, I may even add more rope later.

And now for 60 inches of the Megalomaniac toy that Macs can envy and Sophie will destroy!!!

Megalomaniac II

None of the wood is toxic, mostly pine, and yes the leather is all veggi tanned.

Long lengths of rope with heavy things at the bottom are very dangerous as they can strangle a bird should it get it around it's neck. The toys need to be augmented so the heavy things are at the top and stings and topes kept short. Good job though!

Oh wow, now that's a bunch of fun chewing toys. Great job. I like the idea of doing your own wood, that way you are sure it's safe. Great idea.

Look like months of chewing there!

I just want to echo the point above - long strands of rope or leather that can wrap around the bird's neck can be deadly. I pack the strands with blocks and beads, knotting between, no long strands without strung toys and blocks. Then keep an eye on the toy to make sure long strands don't develop when parts are chewed off.

That looks awesome! I'll bet your bird is having a blast with that monster. I've been dying to make a giant toy like that, just haven't worked up the energy (or maybe courage?).
