I tried to find vegetable tanned leather locally at a craft shop

but nobody knew if the leather was vegetable tanned or not

tho i did see some "natural" leather

would using natural leather be ok/safe?

Vegetable Tanned Leather

babypiggy,
You may be OK selecting what appears to be natural leather, however make sure the finish is not coated, painted or dyed. An old time method to determin chrome tanning is to burn the leather a green flame indicates a chrome base.
Today you can find a wide range of natural color pigments in veggie tanned leather from all shades of white to all shades of browns and tans.
The majority of all vegetable tanned leather is now imported into the US. What is realy sad is that this country no longer produces a vegetable tanned sole leather.
