Toy Parts?

I would like to start getting into making some of my own bird toys for Sunny and Skittles. I was just hoping for some tips on getting started. What types of things are safe to use in toy-making from stores and around the house? And where are some good places (online or stores) to get safe toy parts?

hey there craft stores are usually where I start

Hi I go to micheals craft stores and get hemp cord or rope and add wooden beads cause if you have chewers those are the safest . I try not to add bells afraid of them getting caught on their feet . try there first and start braiding your hemp cord so that it wont fall apart the first day . Good luck dear and I hope I helped.

Baby and Children toys are usually safe, blocks, rattles, etc... make sure they are made in the USA... the China recalls and lead are a concern with birds as well as children.

That CheepParrotToysNTips is a great place for making just about anything. And they have a detailed list and a good info on how to make them. If that's not enough, you can sign up to make a toy while they are teaching it. And you can find a lot of stuff at Home Depot, Dollar Store, Michaels (but check about the China stuff) in order to make them. One of the best areas at Cheep is the "atom and boings" area which shows how to make the Atom ball in all sizes. Go check it out!

toys

Toys for your bird : Empty wood spools of thread;A new mop head; Cut up jeans. Cut each pant leg off, then cut 1-2 inch strips from the edge of the pant all the way to the seam. Then cut open the remaining loops. The end result a long tastle of jeans. This can be hung over, or near your birds. They can chew, or snuggle, or climb it.
I also sometimes get my toy parts from different bird toy part internet sites.
Hope this helps

Thank you for all of your ideas. I will keep them in mind. I made an order of bird toy parts from Grey Feather Toys. Can't wait to get started!

I have a grey that loves to chew. I also sew so have many scrap pieces of material. I string the material thru a chain and let her chew away. I have also taken coffee filters, drill a hole in the middle and hang this in her cage. She will chew and shred away.... Also adding maching tape roll hung in the cage is a great fun time for Meeko to pull and shred.

I just purchased some doll clothes pins, no metal, and drilled a hole in the top, dyed them and food coloring and strung them. I also had some toothbrushes from our Dr and hung them on the toy, plastic kids silverware and rattles.

Once you start, it is really fun and much cheaper than buying all this.

Baby's plastic shape blocks - I drill holes in the center of each one and tie a piece of sisal string thru it and then tie the other end of the string to SS chain and hang inside of cage - Peeka loves to untie the sisal and drop the blocks to the bottom of his cage and kick them around before I rebuild it. I will mention watch your birds toe nails and the SS chain - I worry at times about Peeka getting his toes stuck while hanging upside down and playing roughly.
