Making beginner stage toys for small birds
Hello all!
I was hoping that I could get some good suggestions for where to start with foraging toys. I have a 2 month old Parrotlet, Bonsai, who I would like to encourage to use foraging toys but I don't quite know where to go from there. I want to start him out with some REALLY basic things that I can make myself. I tried wrapping a nutriberry and some millet inside a small piece of paper towel with hemp string tying it closed, but he completely ignores it as far as I am aware. Can anyone suggest some easier things for a tiny sized bird such as him??? Thanks! :) -Victoria

My vet gave me a handout on some simple foraging activities and I also have a Parrotlet. One idea was just to simply cover the food with part of a paper towel so he would just have something to move out of the way, once he gets the hang of it, the hand out said you could use masking tape to tape down some of the sides to make it more challenging. Another activity was to bury the food in a dish with shredded paper (works best with dry food). Link, my parrotlet, really likes things that hang down... he's much more interested in broccoli when I push the tops through the bars on top of his cage. You could try the wrapping the food again, maybe have him watch you do it and use thin paper (if you have 2 ply paper towels, separate the plies and use one) and try anchoring it to a toy or the cage so he doesn't have to hold on to it. You could also roll the paper into a tube, that way he could see what was inside.

Awesome ideas!! I wrote them all down. Thank you! Link is an awesome name for a parrotlet, btw.
I also saw somewhere someone who stuffed a whole pepper with seeds and veggies for their bird. Of course, that would be too much for a little parrotlet, but I took the end of a zucchini and stuffed some chopped veggies and a nutriberry inside. I will give that to him tomorrow while I am at work and see how he made out with it when I get home. :)
