mix food colouring with rubbing alcohol, not more than 70% solution, it dries quickly and at the same time it disinfects the wood. It is safe and many have been doing it for a long time. I have never had a problem with any of my dyed wooden toys.

I recommend Vitacritter - Exquisite Colourant Toy Color Concentrates
It may seem expensive but a little lasts a LONG time... and you don't have to use a bunch of food coloring to achieve the same effect as VitaCritter Dyes.
