Just to jump in and say Plywood? No.

All natural woods are best, nothing that has been glued, varnished, stained or painted should be used. Pine, cedar, oak are all fine.

Tools needed...
  • Drill (I would recommend a drill press)
  • Saw (I would recommend a miter saw)
  • 1/2"in or 1"in drill bit
  • 1/16th drill bit (something about the diameter size of a toothpic - no wider than tho)
  • Tape measure - to measure out the drill holes and the dowel lengths
  • 4ft 1x1 or 2x2 This will make a 2ft ladder!
  • 8ft 1/2"in or 1"in wooden dowel (2 4ft'ers will do) You'll have some left over
  • Restaraunt style toothpics (sandwich stackers).

A simple 1x1 and a 1/2" wooden dowel would work just fine. This would work for birds up to and including and alexadrine.

then go to a 2x2 and 1" dowel for greys, too's and even macaws.

Drill holes (1/2 inch bit for the 1x1 and 1 inch bit for the 2x2) with equal spacing down two lengths of the 1x1 or the 2x2 and then cut your dowel into lengths (5 inches each for the 1x1 or 8 inches each for the 2x2)

Now push the dowels pieces thru the holes in the 1x1's or the 2x2's. Ladder done.

If your dowels slide thru the holes too easily. Assemble your ladder and drill a hole completely thru the 1x1 and the dowel and then insert a toothpic thru both and cut off the excess. This will lock your ladder rungs in place.
