Balsa wood

Has anyone tried making toys with balsa wood before? I saw a toy at an online store that used balsa wood with holes drilled/cut into it, and then rope threaded through and knotted with beads. I thought it was a good idea and should be pretty easy to find a hardware or craft stores, but I don't know if balsa is safe for birds to chew on and rip up. Any thoughts? Thanks!

It is plenty safe as long as it is not treated, stained, painted etc.

BUT... I bet it will last about 10 seconds with a bird like Dolly! LOL

Ha, you might be right about that, she does like to destroy things :) I will probably still give it a try just to see what happens!

If it is not long lived enough... try pine. It is still soft, but not quite as soft as balsa. I like some of the choices here:
