Homemade perches and things

I dont know if anyone has posted this before as its not my idea, its one i found on a website ages ago.
Some thing my ringneck loves are my homemade perches.
You get fabric, i use old sheets. You tear them into strips and plat them as tightly as you can, then you just hang them in the cage. For thicker perches i make three plats and plat them together.
Each one takes me an hour or so and you can make them for smaller birds too.
I spent a good long while making one for Dotty and after she finished climbing on it she set to destroying it.
The best thing is you can make the plats into all sorts and they are washable and cheap to replace when they have been knawed to bits.

The first picture is not great, but its of Dottys pink ladder thing, and her hoop.
The ladder thing is made from two plats knotted together in anyway that makes a ladder shape, i just messed around till it looked ok.
The hoop i made by taking the metal hoop from the bottom of a lamp shade and wrapping a plat round it and tying it on.

The second picture is of the new budgie Dawn with a simple plat perch. Ignore the rubber plant in the back ground its in the kitchen where the birds dont go except for photos.

I did the same type thing with the "supreme" type cotton rope (the kind that is made of really short fibers and pulls apart easily from the end)... it is surprisingly strong!

I would be REALLY careful doing this with fabric, especially sheets. The threads for sheets are quite strong... and depending on the sheet, they can be tiny. If a thread gets wrapped around a toe and you do not notice, it can cut off the blood supply quite easily. Not to mention having threads wrap around feet, necks, and god knows what else.

I think of these things as I have a GCC that is quite insistent on trying to do himself in on a daily basis. I am going to see if I can get paid by a bird toy company as a beta tester. If it has a flaw or any dangerous element... he will find it in short order (or make it have one if in any way possible!).

I am really careful to check the perches and things daily, so far the budgie isnt nibbling hers and Dottys ladder thing and hoop are holding up well with no hanging threads. Dotty chews hers into little bits. She used to do it to her multi coloured flexi perch thing but has now set her sights on things she sees me working to make, hmmm! not sure how should take that, errm maybe its a compliment.

Plait = braid

Those of us on this side of the pond talk funny. I think it started as a way to annoy good ole King George in the 1700's!

<starts singing "Why Can't the English Teach Their Children How to Speak" from My Fair Lady...>
An Englishman's way of speaking absolutely classifies him,
The moment he talks he makes some other
Englishman despise him.
One common language I'm afraid we'll never get.
Oh, why can't the English learn to set
A good example to people whose
English is painful to your ears?
The Scotch and the Irish leave you close to tears.
There even are places where English completely
disappears. In America, they haven't used it for years!)
