How do you know?

So, I am really excited about the prospect of making my own toys for my senegal and my tiel (I mean, why do my work for my PhD when I can distract myself with my birds.) That being said, I am VERY poor, so I was going to go to the dollar store to buy supplies, then if I have to I'll hit up the craft stores. How do you know if things are bird friendly?r How about things like leather? My sennie LOVES leather.

Thanks.

I did the dollar store shopping spree abot a month back as well. I got some giant plastic straws and also plain craftsticks. I chose nothing with colors. My Sennie absolutely loved both of these toys. I used natural twine and cotton rope to string them, but I have since bought some think chain and also a straight stiff wire. I have to admit, I got the ideas from someone else who posted their home made toys here.

I found that the simplest things can be fun toys!
My parakeet, LittleOne, LOVED rubberbands, after making sure they are too small to get his head over, or too big to worry about getting caught up in it, I would let him have it.
A whole bag of tiny little rubberbands, used as hair ties, was a whole new experience! I just opened up a small hole in the top of the bag and pulled a few out and that was it! He took a couple weeks to pull them out, one bu one, and run around with it, like it was a treasure, before dropping it off the side of the table, into the "abyss" (where he was not allowed, and resued when he fell off by accident.).
Sadley, LittleOne passed away a couple weeks ago. My new friend, Dadulas, is not as friendly, from the start, but I'm hoping he will also find fun like other birds I've had, have.

Leather must be "vegetable tanned."
