Is RIT or similar type dyes safe?

We have been making our own bird toys using sisal and cotton rope I was wondering if you could use RIT to dye the rope. Bucky called the company and they told him that there was nothing toxic in the RIT dye but I just wanted to know what everyone else thought or knew. I was thinking that the RIT would work better on the rope and stuff since it is made for fabric.

Thanks for your input.

Don't use RIT, use food grade dyes. There's even one that's made specifically for bird toys, I forget what it's called though.

buy vitacritter or use food coloring. Mix it with the alcohol and go. the alcohol will dissapate when dry.

I don't use any water at all. The alcohol is so that you can use it again. Other wise it will start growing stuff.

I did not have any luck at all with the alcohol I just went with the old easter egg recipe and used vinegar. The color seems to take much better. I have not tried vitacritter yet tho will look into it.

Thanks

Pretty good here the kids are keepin us busy, Bucky's dad has been ill so we have taken all 3 of the feathered kids and the 10 yr old human child to SC by car (over 10 hours one way) I am very happy to say that they ride beautifully much better outta the cage on a knee than in the travel carrier.

Skipper and Caly are learning to chew wood they still sit like lumps a whole bunch :-s but we keep tryin to entice them to play.

Caly who was supposed to be Bucky's bird has chosen the human child (the one with the attention span of a gnat) to be her human. It is so funny when he ignores her and she screams we put her on the floor and tell her to go get him then she follows him around like a regular Fido ROFL.

I seem to be Skipper's human he keeps trying to feed me fortunately he just keeps it in his mouth and eats it tho. I just tell him thank you I am full. He is making a mess of his tail tho :( the casings on his pin feathers are very sensitive so I cant "help" him by rubbing them off and he has broken 2 of his feathers just past the casing so the feather is gone but the casing remains I feel so bad for him we are gonna try and put him in the bathroom a few more days a week. We shower him once a week but the breeder that works the flea market said that just the steam wont dry out his skin and may help the casings loosen up. They look and feel like drinking straw poor guy.

They are saying quite a few things now including Bucky and Mama Skipper laffs alot, They both are grinding their beaks quite a bit too. We take them riding in the car a few times a week and walking at the flea market at least every 2 weeks or so. Skipper still gets a bit agitated when people walk by and flaps, especially men, but we are working on them.

Over all I am so happy that we found them and hope we are not teaching them too many bad habits lol.

Thanks for asking.
