I've looked at it before too... brought back memories of MY middle school time. :)
I ThInK it would be safe (as in non-toxic since its for kids, don't know about birds). I've not seen anyone say for sure. Defiantly interested in following this thread!

In short lengths, it might be fine but I don't know about any toxicity issues with it. However, just like all rope, you need to make sure it's not long enough for the bird to get it wrapped around his neck.
