DIY Foraging Toy Ideas: Rice Cakes and Ice Cream Cones

Kris Porter, author of the Parrot Enrichment books and author of the awesome site by the same name, writes articles for the Phoenix Landing newsletter (and now blog).

Here's her latest on integrating rice cakes into DIY foraging toys. Looks like a lot of fun!

That is really a really cute idea but I can't figure out how to get treats in the ice cream cone? Am I missing something, she has it upside down?

I tried the ice cream cone thing last year. Bought the tiniest toddler sized cones and smeared the inside with a bit of peanut butter, then filled with some nuts/seeds/fruit/vegs. Put them inside the cage and the birds reacted like I was trying to detonate a bird-poisoning bomb or something. Wouldn't go anywhere near the cones - at all. Tried a fresh cone every day for a week and couldn't convince any of the birds to even go up to it and look at it. Sigh.

However, I like the idea of stringing the cone on a toy! Maybe they'll get used to the cone if they think it's part of a toy first. Then I can add some treats to it later! I also like the idea of stringing up a rice cake! Definitely going to try that too!

thanks for the link!
