Need your opinion re. taming??

Hi everyone!

My two red-Rumps aren't tamed but I wish they were
Their wings are clipped and when I'm attending to them, sometimes one will pop out of the cage, when I manage to catch it, I try to hold it in my hands for a while and pressed against me and patting his head, do you think that could help tame them this way or should I just go back to trying the open hand in the cage offering a treat? That has had no progress so far.
What is your opinion?

Thankyou for any help/info you may have!!!!

Cheers
Kat

I dont have red rumps so I can't offer specific information. But I do have rosellas and they're somewhat similar to personality. I've always been told that even handfed rosellas don't make very good, tame companions.

I definitely would NOT pat the bird on its head. Anytime you approach a bird from above, they go into their "oh-oh-a-predator-is-coming" mode. Instead, start by touching their feet and work your way gradually up their chest. Expect to be bitten numerous times. Also expect them to quickly move away from your hand. Just be persistent and hopefully they'll come around a little bit.

I would also strong suggest against trying to hold them until they are to the point where they're comfortable with you slowly moving your hand towards them and petting either their wing or head. It will take awhile so be patient. Having something they love as a treat doesn't hurt either. I've never been above a bribe.

Ok Thanks Jmacke
So my idea with the patting won't be so succesful...I guess I was hoping to hurry things up a bit
I don't want to do the opposite and scare them off even more......ho hum...ok....I'll have to be patient.
Thanks guys!!
