Lovebird won't allow me to touch wings

My guy Tui has been with me for a month now today. And while he settled in I made sure his diet was good, he was keeping weight, learned how to play with toys, had time out with me, clean cage and food/water, and etc.

But, one thing I have done far too long is let him have his space. I feel that it is necessary he gets used to my hands inspecting his wings. Should he ever break a bloodfeather or damage something else I am afraid he won't trust me to handle it or apply first-aid.

Also, I am considering letting him stay flighted once his flight feathers regrow from his first clip. (I don't want him hurting himself with his semi-flight capable hops and glides that usually end in awkward landings or in poor position to avoid contact with his flapping wings. ) So, in that case a flight harness/suit is my best bet with him when I go outside like we do now. I don't want him to get startled and hurt himself. Putting on a flight suit will be hard under his current dislike of anyone handling his wings.

So, any tips on how to get my little guy to allow me to touch his wings? Any approaches I need to use to make it easy on him?

Thanks!

P.S. You know what, I think I will post a short video tomorrow when he is awake of how he reacts to my going for his wings so you guys can point out any mistakes on my part and know with certainty how he reacts to my advances.

I think it is very natural for a bird to be protective of their wings,as their survival depends on flying. If Tui likes head scritches you could try to touch one wing each time you scritch. You could also try holding millet spray in one hand for a distraction while you stroke the outside of one wing. You will have to do a little each day and build up his tollerance for it.

it took peaches 9 months before she would allow me to touch her wings. i had to "work up" to that with alot of patience and trust building. i never wanted to rush her but let her do it on her terms. she learned the "up up" command within a week and that is how i would get her. over the next several months she would sit on my hand, arm, shoulder but if i went to touch her she'd nip and back away. then one day she finally allowed me to give her scritches on the back of her head! now she takes her head and puts it under my hand and i can pet her head and back. she also now lets me pick her up with my hand around her body...something that would've never happened before. just give your lovie some time. if an emergency should come up, just use a towel to wrap her in. that's what i would do when i clipped peaches wings.
