I know a lot of people aren't a fan of his techniques but I personally found this video very helpful and thought I would share here. Chet calls it the PowerPause

Send a message via AIM to Xray Susie
I've heard that the clicker is good for birds, dogs, and horses.

Karen Pryor Clickertraining | dog training and cat training info, books, videos, events -- $1.79 for clicker, $3.45 for shipping to Australia, for a grand total of $5.24. (I think that's AUD$6.04?)

Anywho, I got mine at a petstore. I'm sure you could find one there (or maybe somewhere cheaper online). They're usually in the section with the dog stuff or with the cashiers since they're small.

Some people use a ballpoint pen or click their tongues. There's also a good clicker training group on Yahoo or ask jenseits some questions. She's got her sun conure doing all kinds of cute stuff. :)

When Stewie first came home with me, he was barely tame, so "all kinds of stuff" is pretty relative

6 months ago he wouldn't have anything to do with hands, bit me if I didn't pay attention, and tried several times to fly out the (closed, sliding glass) door when he thought I wasn't looking.

Using clicker training, I've built a good, solid relationship with him where he knows that he can communicate with me without biting. He also steps up now (sometimes), targets, gives kisses, retrieves (i.e. brings me small objects), puts a ball in a cup, and puts rings on a peg. He does these very well now.

Stewie really enjoys doing his "stupid parlor tricks" for treats, and I enjoy having a tame bird who likes interacting with me.

Here are some pics of him doing tricks: More Bird Trick Training (with props) « Best in Flock - Blog About My Conure Parrot

I haven't done any training (new tricks) with him in a long time -- I've been lazy -- but I now want to start on a couple of non-prop tricks. Yesterday he's pretty much figured out that "wings up" means he should lift his wings. And this weekend I'll start working on getting him to wave on cue.

Clicker training definatly works without a doubt. I'm a personal testimony to that with my bird.
That video is a good study to look at rewards
-He recommends as a treat, you leave the room. He say's "withdrawing from his environment because he no longer wants you in it, because after all that's what he wants the most". I wouldn't use my leaving the room and my absence as a "Treat". Reason I question that is what does he do about other desired action? It's gonna be hard to click and leave the room while teaching Paco to stepup or do a trick. Also, leaving is not a good way to promote the bird into your flock or increase trust. Of course, I guess one could say that if the bird is leaving the room, he is TRUSTING you to leave the room. I dunno, All birds are different. Cleo did great clicker training with food treats.
He might later recommend that you change the reward to food or something else. Typically, clicker training starts with a target, not with absence. But, you know..whatever works best and is best for the bird.
If anyone has the whole video, I'd be curious to know if he changes the treats later.
Great video and post. THANKS for posting it here!
Mark

That is a WONDERFUL example of a success story of one our very own members. I've copied that post into the Quick reference section in training. My goal is to create a database there of success stories so that anyone can go there and see #1 that it CAN be done, and #2 get ideas on how to make their relationship with their bird easier and more fun.
Thanks!
Mark
