Parrotlet takes advantage when I'm not around
I am bird mom to a 10 week old Parrotlet named Bonsai.
The problem I am having is this: He apparently isn't very nice to people when I'm not in the room! My boyfriend was all upset this morning because he thinks that Bonsai hates him. When I am out of the room and Richard is trying to get him to step up from his play stand, or even from his shoulder, he bites him HARD... I believe hes bit my mom too. But when I am in the room he is a perfect angel! He doesn't bite me often, and when he does even if its my rings or something, when I say "No biting" he listens. I have tried telling him that its because when he bites he whips his hand away and yelps, Bonsai is taking advantage of him because he knows he'll stop trying to get him if he bites. So he gets all huffy saying "Fine.. then I wont touch him unless you are here." I'm in the process of clicker training, and plan to have Richard help me so that Bonsai knows he is boss too. I guess what I am asking is if there is something else I can tell him that might help him?? Thanks!

Teach Bonsai to step up on a stick, and have other people use this technique if they want him to step up when you're not around. This way their hand doesn't get close enough for the bird to bite them.
Having other people help with the clicker training won't teach the bird that they're 'boss', but it CAN help change the bird's attitude toward them. Birds tend to think kindly of people who give them delicious treats. It doesn't even have to be official clicker training to take advantage of this. Have them give the bird a small treat or two to sweeten his mood, then pick him up and reward him for not biting. After the bird is used to this happening with you in the room, have them try it (carefully!) when you're not around. If the bird threatens to bite they should calmly and casually back off, but if he cheerfully steps up then that calls for a reward!
