Screaming Cockatiel

Are there any training suggest for a Cockatiel who screams whenever you leave a room?

Your tiel is screaming to get your attention. If you come right back and give him attention the behavior is then reinforced. If after some time it figures out it doesnt work it should cease to happen. Don't be surprised if it happens allot and with more intensity before it slows and or stops.

I agree with the above post but what I did when Zeke used to scream is do a certain whistle back to him so he knew I was still there. After a couple of days he started doing the whistle instead of screaming.

Idea

Hi,

I had a similar problem w/ a cockatiel I rescued. He would scream or would whistle very loudly when leaving a room. I knew that he hadn't recieved much attention at previous home. So I now when leaving a room, I put on his fav. music for him as it was "noise" he would change his tone to whistling to it. He seemed to talk and whistle more when I'm in the room and thats what he wanted was an audience. The music was almost the same thing. If that wouldn't work for your bird, as other people have suggest ignore his screaming and I agree as he knows eventually you will return because of the screams. Hope this helps! Let us know how you make out:)

Screaming when you leave the room is a flock call and it's normal, natural behavior. Just talk back or whistle so he knows where you are and he should stop calling in a short time. There's no problem unless the screaming goes on and on.

Tiels use these calls in the wild to keep track of where everyone is right after the flock separates. It's very useful for owners of multiple tiels, because when one bird flies off or everyone flies in different directions you just follow the screams to find any birds whose location you aren't sure of. You have to be quick though because the shrieking doesn't last very long. There are times when I wish they'd keep it up longer!
