Terrified of towels...

Hey Gang!

Ever since Pogo came into our home she has been terrified of towels or for that matter anything going over her head. I've tried the take it easy approach, bring it into the room, leave it on the table, move it to her cage. She will accept all that and will even sit on it but as soon as you touch a corner she flips out. I suspect this is the result of something that happened before I got her, but is there a way to over come it?

Hmm.. Im not sure..... Now this is what I would do... ( you may think its crazy) but I would put the towel over my head and make it look very interesting to Pogo.... Or even maybe just cover your hand with the towel and kinda do a peek a boo thing....

I do not know if you can get this DVD in Canada, but expert bird trainer Barbara Heidenreich has a DVD, Training Your Parrot for the Veterinary Exam. To see more about it check: Training Your Parrot for the Veterinary Exam (Series Part 2) by Barbara Heidenreich - Bird video tapes and parrot DVDs from Avian Publications. . The description says that it teaches you how to get your bird used to towels and towel restraint.

I agree with Matt, the video is great. I have one, too. The jist of it is to pair it with something positive. The video is worth the investment because it is inexpensive - the trianing though, is invaluable.

Did the person you got Pogo from throw a towel over her to get her out of the cage? That's what the pet store did with my conure and he was terrified of towels as well. I started with washcloths and played peekaboo (AFTER he trusted me as his new owner to begin with!) and now he doesn't mind at all, crawls under blankets and everything.

Good question Razzle. Unfortunatley I can't answer it but I will suspect that is the case.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say that I told mine what a GOOD BIRDIE he was for even watching me put a washcloth over my head and play peekaboo.
