Just a Little up date, my'tiel USED to be a biter!
Yes, the first two weeks, it was a bit of a battle, for both of us, with me allways coming out bloddied.
But just as soon as I started using a old pairn of black winter cloves, and he realied he wasn't hurting ME, and I wasn't trying to hurt HIM, he just quit biting! It's been about 4 months I think, since I got Icarus (not too original, I know), "Icky", and I are INSEPARABLE! I used to live in a motel, and would go up and down, in fron, in it's parking lot of about 1/4 mile, and 35 units, where the 'tiel would just hold on to my shoulder a little tighter, head into the wind, while we sped along at the blistering pace of 7mph , the top speed of my powerchair. OF COURSE HIS WINGS ARE CLIPPED! I haven't clippped them again, and I also let him TRY to fly! My belief is if you are in a safe area, your 'tiel will learn to "map" it oin his brain, and as soon as he CAN fly a little, if better be back to me, first! Then, later, if he suddenly decides to fly away and never come back, I would be very upset..but I truly believe in the bond of affection, of a single bird and their owners. Morth than one to one, might be different, in a bigger "flock", or if my roomates came into my room, yet, this IS a new situation for him, and me too! About a week ago I moved into a 3 beddroom house, that theowner rents out 2 of the rooms in. He also has a secnd cage..that I placed, originally like a tree..but with the door open. Well, he's NOW decided that he likes being INSIDE the new cazge, in the newapt., he may be less assured as he was geeing in a single room, studio unit I had. He seems happy, healthy and is tring to emulate a song "stormy weather", that I whistle for him, everyday a few times, and the "wolf-whistle", too..alnog with the two-noye, "hell-0", or like a "ding-dong" of the front doorbell. HE does that whenever he's a little unsure, when we are together, too. Love your buddies, they will love you! |

My 'tiel used to be a bitter, he actually hated me, wouldn't come near me. We adopted him from a friend. I would simply throw a towel over him and then gently place my hands around him so he couldnt move and then I'd hiss at him repeatedly. He didn't realize it was me, i guess he thought it was a predator, and when I'd remove the towel he'd be so freaked out he'd go right to my shoulder and start nuzzling against me and cleaning my hair and ears.

Really? You hissed at your bird? That is terrible. An unethical as far as I am concerned. And guess what, he knew it was you. Are you serious?
That is called flooding and no trainer worth his salt would ever do such a thing. |

A friend of mine had a 'Tiel she was crazy about, and the bird spent almost all day when the owner was home on her shoulder. She loved the bird and visa versa. The wings were starting to grow out, and I cautioned her that 'Tiels are excellent flyers even missing some feathers, and to be very careful with doors, etc. One day, the bird got spooked by a construction worker she was talking to, flew out the open door and was never seen again. She posted reward flyers everywhere for over two miles in each direction. It was a devastating loss for her. Hope the same thing doesn't happen to you!
