Question Is the "Don't Do That" noise o.k?

Whenever Rio, my sun conure, does something he shouldn't, like bite real hard on my clothes or bite at me, before I move him or my hand away I make a noise. It's like a louder short "Shhh." I say No afterward, but I guess it is to get his attention and so I dont yell at him. Then I put him in his cage. Is it alright to do that? Does anyone else have a way (for lack of a better word) to dicipline their bird, other than just putting them back in their cage?

Frankly I get out a small roaster pan, add chopped carrots, celery, spices and add one bird! JUST KIDDIN! I make an AH ah no sound and it gets their attention. So I think you are doing fine!

I actually do the very same thing. When my Zimba would try to bite i would always tell him no bite. It fell on deaf ears,he paid absolutley no attention to my nos and would continue trying to bite me. I thought there must be a better way of getting thru to him and thought of the dog whisperer who always made a shhh sound to discipline the dogs. I decided to try it with Zimba and it actually works. When he trys to bite i shh and then tell him no bite and he actully pays attention and stops trying to bite and steps up nicely. I say whatever works for you is alright cause it sure works for me.

My cockatoo used to bite toes, and we would say NO TOES which she then started yelling as she was charging our feet. (It was funny and then painful!!). We shortened it to NO and she understands that and will stop on a dime if we say no. It only took...4 years to train her that!! It's was well worth the time.

When Tigger was being handfed, we would tell me, "ah, ah, no bite".
So if another bird bites me, he'll spend the next few minutes telling them that

Actually, thats where I got the sound from!I just didnt know how to explain it at the time.

Really, Rowdy? You're selling your bird? Didn't you know birds make noise, especially suns? I hope thats a joke.

Anyway with my lovebirds I used to gently hold their beaks and say "no bite". One got it really quickly, the other I thought never would but eventually they both knew not to bite - it was pretty amazing. Patience is key!

Rowdy - You don't get a sun conure out if their screaming. Duh. That just shows them that screaming is what draws your attention.

Back to the biting noise - I guess that's more like a "Chh!" I love the dog whisperer! I was shocked when I found him and saw that someone was imitating an animal species' actual language just like I've been doing since I was a kid!
I even make macaw/conure noises back to my fids. ^^

Anyway, I'm not suprised that "chh!" sound works...haven't you ever heard a conure or macaw hiss? It's pretty freaky!

The first time I turned on the ceiling fan while Luca was in her cage I heard this. She was so frozen with alarm that I had to literally pry her off her cage bars (she was completely pressed against them). Freaked me out....but she was okay. Etty and Karis will still do it at night if woken and they feel scared/threatened. It's unreeal.

As for me, I make a sharp "Ah!" sound that mimics a pissed off Macaw these days...but also a stern "no" will do the trick. I alternate between the two. They're usualy gut reactions so it's hard to know which one will come out. ^^
