Time and patience can help a lot. Start by sitting by the cage reading and talking to the bird. Try not to "force" your attention on the bird but be persistant in your presence... Try "step up" training with a prop (like a piece of dowling). Training Your Pet Parrot - Step Up, Step Down

Read this site: The Rational Parrot

to try and understand more about your bird.

You have a wonderful pet bird there - but it will take time to develop trust and a bond. Have faith...

It will happen.

Sophie, my Alexandrine, is very territorial when in or on her cage. She steps up best for me when from a playstand. I never take her out of her cage but let her get out on her own. She was 2 yrs old and half wild when I got her, so it may be different for you with a baby, but I know they are protective of the cage and food dishes in general. Sophie also took a long time to build a relationship with, she really had to get to know me. Forcing the issue only causes a set back. She's the type of bird who likes to be near me, and watching me, but not on me most of the time. She enjoys some shoulder time but is mostly hands off. So I would start by just talking gently and softly to him sitting near the cage and from across the room and go slow.

This is how I tame my birds. ALWAYS make slow movements around them. Not fast abrupt movements or this will send them into a panic. This takes a long time, be patient and don’t give up.

#1. Put your hand is the cage very still and hold in there. Do this threw ought the day. As much as possible.

Once they get used to your hands being in the cage move on to step #2.

#2. Hold your hand in the cage with a treat. This process may take a while. They will eventually take it from you. After #2. Move on to step #3.

#3. Now you’re ready for “step up”. Put your hand in the cage and when they go to your hand press your hand under there belly to train them to step up on your hand. Always use the command words and once they learn that give them a treat for stepping up on your hand.

I didn't know that. I always go from the fronts. Hmm, thanks for the tip. Is that just for new birds until they get used to step up?

doesnt picking them up from behind freak them out because they are in essence a prey animal? is it not better from the front so they can see what is coming at them?
